Are Women Taking Over the Commercial Photography Space?
The commercial photography industry has traditionally been a male-dominated space, but I’m thrilled to say that change is finally here! Recently, I had an eye-opening conversation with an agency that revealed something exciting: clients are now actively requesting female photographers. This shift is powerful, and it’s got me thinking—what’s driving this change?
As a female photographer myself, I’ve seen the commercial photography world evolve over the years. While technical skills have always been essential, it’s clear that something else is at play here. Beyond the camera and lighting skills, what’s really making women stand out in this industry today? I’d argue that it’s the unique combination of relationship-building, kindness, collaborative energy, and a creative confidence that resonates deeply with clients.
So, why are female photographers absolutely killing it in the commercial space in 2025?
Creative Vision:
Women in photography are bringing fresh perspectives that challenge the norm and spark new ideas. We aren’t afraid to push boundaries and explore new directions—but above all we focus on relationships and feelings over technical execution. This creative vision helps brands stand out and break through the clutter in a saturated market.
Collaboration & Community:
Female photographers are natural collaborators. We’re masters at building networks that empower and elevate each other, creating spaces where we share knowledge, ideas, and opportunities. Our best work is always done with a team, not alone. And let’s face it—when we lift each other up, everyone benefits.
Kind Attitude:
It’s often said that kindness is a superpower—and in the commercial space, it goes a long way. Women tend to approach their work with a collaborative mindset, focusing on creating a positive and kind atmosphere on set. We understand the value of relationships, and that extends to everyone we work with, from assistants to clients.
Resilience & Determination:
We’ve faced challenges in an industry that hasn’t always been welcoming, and those obstacles have only fuelled our creativity and determination. Each setback has driven us to think more innovatively, to push harder, and to find new ways to succeed. That resilience is a huge part of why women are thriving in this space today.
The commercial photography industry is changing fast, and I couldn’t be prouder of all the incredible women leading the charge. From creating innovative concepts to building supportive communities, female photographers are transforming the way we approach commercial photography in 2025 - It's finally happening!!
The real question is: What kind of positive change will we see next? I’m beyond excited to see what this year brings—and to continue being part of this amazing movement.
Be brave, let's do this girls!
